(Neo-Gricean Pragmatics)?

They got married and had a baby.

they got married and then had a baby.

and then 并不是 and 的额外 lexical sense,却可能影响 utterance 的 truth conditions。

(Communication Bottleneck)

1
2
3
Speaker:
→ utterance

(R-Principle)

  • Q-Principle:Say enough。
  • R-Principle:Say no more than necessary。

Some of the students enjoyed the class.

存在 scale:

1
<all, some>

some +> not all

4. Levinson:Q / I / M 启发式(Heuristics)

Heuristic
Q What isn’t said isn’t 比较信息强弱的 alternatives
I What is expressed simply is stereotypically exemplified unmarked form → stereotypical situation
M What’s said in an abnormal way isn’t normal marked form → marked situation

例如 some 相对于 all。

I took a corner too quickly and fell off my bike.

I fell off my bike because I took the corner too quickly.

1
marked form → complement of the stereotype

Horn Levinson
Q/R interaction M marked form 暗示 marked situation

  1. alternatives / informativeness
  2. stereotype / enrichment
  3. markedness / non-stereotypical interpretation

Horn 用 Q/R,Levinson 用 Q/I/M,而 Leech 还强调 social goals。
