1. 从真值条件(Truth Conditions)到“用语言做事”

传统 truth-conditional semantics 主要关心一个 proposition 在什么条件下为真,但很多 utterances 的核心并不是描述世界,例如:

Enjoy yourself.
Don’t touch it!
You are fired.

Austin 因此提出 speech act theory:说话本身可以是在做事。他最初区分:

  • Constatives:描述世界,可按 truth conditions 评价;
  • Performatives:说出 utterance 本身就是实施某种行动。

但 Austin 后来放弃了严格二分,因为普通 assertions 也会给 speaker 带来 commitments,也有自己的 felicity conditions。更一般的结论是:所有 utterances 都具有 performative dimension。

2. 适切条件(Felicity Conditions)

某些社会行动不能靠随便说出一串词就成功,例如宣誓、判刑、结婚、解雇等。它们需要满足 felicity conditions(适切条件),包括:

  1. 存在一个 accepted conventional procedure;
  2. 特定 persons 与 circumstances 适合调用这一 procedure;
  3. procedure 被正确、完整地执行;
  4. participants 具有相应 thoughts / feelings / intentions,并打算按照该行为继续行事。

这些条件既 enable 也 constrain language as action:语言之所以能改变社会现实,是因为相应制度与互动规范允许它产生这种效果;但谁有 authority、什么场合有效,也由这些条件限制。

课堂还进一步提出:authority 并不总是静态给定的。某些 performative act 也可能成为 claiming / creating authority 的方式。Langton 的 back-door speech acts 则说明,一个 utterance 明面上实施一种行为,也可能通过 audience acquiescence 在背后强化另一种社会规范或权力关系。

3. 言内行为(Locutionary Act)、言外行为(Illocutionary Act)与言后行为(Perlocutionary Act)

Austin 区分三个重要层次:

层次 核心问题
Locutionary act utterance 的 propositional content / “说了什么”
Illocutionary act 这个 utterance 在互动中“算作”什么行为
Perlocutionary act/effect utterance 对 hearer 的思想、情绪或行为产生什么效果

例如 Adam 关掉电视后 Bella 说:

Hey, I was watching that!

可以分析为:

  • locutionary content:Bella 当时正在看那个节目;
  • illocutionary act:protest / complaint;
  • intended perlocutionary effect:让 Adam 把电视重新打开。

但 perlocutionary effect 不保证实现:Adam 完全可能不理会。这里也要注意,illocutionary act 是社会性的,需要某种 uptake;它不是 speaker 只在自己心中就能完成的行为。

4. Searle:言语行为类型(Speech-Act Types)与适配方向(Direction of Fit)

Searle 常把 speech acts 分成五类:

类型 作用 Direction of fit
断言类(Assertives / Representatives) speaker 承诺某 proposition 对世界的描述 words → world
指令类(Directives) 试图让 hearer 做某事 world → words
承诺类(Commissives) speaker 承诺未来行动 world → words
表达类(Expressives) 表达心理态度或评价 不容易用单一 fit 描述
宣告类(Declarations) 在合适制度条件下通过语言改变社会现实 words ↔︎ world

Direction of fit 用来描述语言与世界之间的调整方向。例如 assertion 试图让 words 符合 world,而 request / order 则试图让 world 最终符合 words。

这套 taxonomy 是有用的分析工具,但不能理解成每种自然语言和文化中的实际 speech acts 都能被一个封闭清单完全穷尽。

5. 字面语力假说(Literal Force Hypothesis)及其限制

最简单的观点是:某些 linguistic forms 自带默认 illocutionary force。

  • explicit performative verbs 可以 lexicalize force,例如 I promise...;
  • sentence types 似乎也默认对应某些 acts:
Sentence type 默认 force
Declarative stating / asserting
Interrogative questioning
Imperative ordering / directing

但现实中 form 与 force 并不是一一对应。英语只有少数 sentence types,而 speech acts 远比它们丰富;有些 act 也没有自然的 performative verb。因此“direct vs. indirect”不能只靠句法类型机械判断。

6. 常规化言语行为(Conventionalized Speech Acts)与间接言语行为(Indirect Speech Acts)

例如:

Can you open the window?

从 sentence type 看是关于 ability 的 interrogative,但在许多 contexts 中高度常规地用于 request。它与真正询问能力的:

Can you speak English?

并不相同。

因此 conventionalized speech acts 在 transparency 与 optionality / cancellability 之间取得折衷:形式很容易触发某个 act reading,但这个 reading 并非完全固定。

不同理论可以用不同方式解释 Can you VP?:

  • conventionalization / ambiguity account;
  • Neo-Gricean GCI(I-heuristic / R-principle);
  • Relevance Theory 的 higher-level explicature。

更典型的 indirect speech act 则高度依赖具体 context。例如:

A: Do you want to go for a coffee?
B: I’ve got to prepare for a seminar.

B 直接执行 statement,但 hearer 会继续推断:

+> B is refusing the invitation.

这与 Gricean reasoning 密切相关:hearer 问“为什么 speaker 在这里说这个?”并恢复另一个 indirect act。

7. 间接性(Indirectness)与礼貌(Politeness)

Indirectness 经常可以减轻 conflict,例如用理由间接拒绝邀请,比单独说 No 留下更多 facework 空间。但:

indirect ≠ polite

同样可以间接地表达非常不友好的内容。真正影响 politeness 的是:

  • context;
  • social relations;
  • inferred content;
  • interactional norms;
  • hearer uptake。

这正好连接到下一部分的 (im)politeness research。

核心框架:

utterance
→ locutionary content
→ illocutionary act(s)
→ perlocutionary effects

form / sentence type

one fixed speech act

Speech Act Theory 的重点,是把语言理解为社会行动:utterance 不只是表示一个 proposition,也可以承诺、要求、抗议、拒绝、改变制度状态,并在互动中产生实际后果。
