1. 韵律(Prosody)为什么属于语用学?
韵律(prosody)包括 pitch、stress、rhythm、tempo / speaking rate、loudness 以及 phonation type 等。它并不是简单附着在 words 外面的“情绪层”,而可以参与多个层次的意义建构:
- lexical meaning:stress 或 lexical tone 可以帮助区分词;
- grammatical / semantic meaning:intonation、focus、stress placement 可以影响 sentence type、information structure 或 truth-conditional interpretation;
- pragmatic meaning:prosody 可以帮助传达 attitude、emotion、irony、speech-act force 等。
因此,prosody 是 multifunctional 的。同一种 prosodic form 在不同 language / dialect 中也不一定具有完全相同的作用。
2. 韵律意义(Prosodic Meaning)的几个层次
课堂把 prosodic meaning 粗略区分为三类。
Encoded meaning
某些 prosodic contrasts 属于比较稳定的 linguistic system,例如 lexical stress、tone 或某些 grammatical intonation。它们可以直接影响 word / sentence interpretation,甚至进入 truth conditions。
Conventionalized / procedural meaning
一些 recognizable intonational contours 与特定 speech acts、attitudes 或 ironic readings 有较稳定联系,但仍然 context-sensitive。这类 prosody 不一定直接增加一个新的 proposition,而更像是 procedural instruction:告诉 hearer 应当如何处理 linguistic content。
因此可以与 Relevance Theory 的 procedural meaning 联系起来。
Non-encoded meaning
还有些 prosodic effects 没有稳定 conventional pattern,而更像 natural highlighting device:它让某个 element 变得 salient,但具体推导什么意义要依赖 context。
这类效果可以和 PCI 类比,但不能简单等同于 implicature,因为 prosody 有时具有明显 iconicity。例如声音颤抖可能让 hearer 推断 speaker 紧张,即使 speaker 并没有意图传达“我很紧张”。
3. 用语用原则(Pragmatic Principles)理解韵律(Prosody)
Prosody 可以和之前学过的 Neo-Gricean reasoning 联系起来。一个典型例子是 contrastive stress:
Calum didn’t EAT your chocolates.
如果没有特殊 marking,I / R 会让 hearer 倾向于 stereotypical interpretation:对 chocolates 最典型的行为就是 eat。但 contrastive stress 把 EAT 标记为 marked,于是 M / Q 会推动 hearer 离开 stereotype:
+> Calum did something else with your chocolates.
可以简化为:
1 | I / R → stereotypical interpretation |
另一个重要现象是 tonality,即 utterance 如何划分成 intonational phrases。Prosodic boundaries 可以帮助解决 structural / scope ambiguity,例如:
He bought white roses | and tulips.
He bought white | roses and tulips.
不同 boundary placement 会影响 white 的 scope,从而影响 interpretation。
4. 说话者意义(Speaker Meaning)不等于听话者获得的全部信息(Information)
Gricean MeaningNN 与 RT 的 ostension 都强调:speaker intends to be understood in a certain way。但现实中 hearer 经常从 behaviour 中得到 speaker 并未有意传达的信息,例如:
- accent 暴露地域或社会背景;
- tone of voice 暴露 mood;
- facial expression、gesture 或 posture 暴露 emotion / stance。
这些 inference 与 implicature 有两个重要差别:
- speaker 不一定意图让 hearer 识别这些信息,甚至可能希望隐藏;
- hearer 通常没有 what is said + recognized speaker intention 作为推理保证,因此 certainty 可能更低。
所以:
information inferred from a person ≠ information communicated by that person
经典 Gricean pragmatics 主要研究后一类,但更宽的 multimodal / social pragmatics 需要同时说明前一类 inference。
5. 迹象(Signs)、信号(Signals)与手势类型(Gesture Types)
去掉“意义必须来自 mind-reading”这一要求后,可以把 human communication 与更广泛的 signalling behaviour 联系起来。
Signs vs. Signals
- sign:作为 behaviour / state 的副产品提供 evidence,但不是为了让别人得到这项 evidence 而产生;
- signal:为了向他者提供 evidence 而存在或演化,即 produced for the sake of another。
这也带出 Theory of Mind 的问题:动物是否能够识别他者 intention,还是主要依据 signals / signs 作出反应?
Gesture research 又常区分:
- Emblems:culture-specific、coded meanings,例如某些群体约定俗成的手势;
- Pantomimes:通过 resemblance / iconicity 表义,不必事先约定一个稳定 code;
- Beat gestures:主要配合 speech 进行 highlight / rhythmic punctuation,本身通常没有独立 conceptual content。
Emblems 的 conventionality 也不一定以“整个民族文化”为单位;一个小型 group 甚至两个人之间也可能形成自己的 coded gesture。
6. 像似符(Icon)、索引符(Index)、符号(Symbol)与社会索引意义(Social Indexical Meaning)
Peirce 的经典三分法从另一角度描述 form 与 meaning 的关系:
- Icon:meaning 来自 resemblance;
- Symbol:meaning 来自 convention;
- Index:meaning 来自 pointing / connection,指向 physical 或 social world 中的某物。
语用学特别重要的是 社会索引意义(social indexical meaning)。不仅 pronouns 可以指向 physical entities,word choice 也可以 index:
- identity;
- social group;
- stance;
- persona;
- relationship between speaker and referent / addressee。
例如 gay, homosexual, queer 等词可能具有相近的 referential / conceptual content,但不同形式、不同 speaker、不同 community 和历史语境会产生不同 social indexical meanings。这里 indexical meaning 有时甚至比“这个词指谁”更重要,因为它影响 participants 如何定位彼此。
7. 如何把这些区分放在一起?
Signs/signals、gesture types、Peircean signs 来自不同 research traditions,并不能机械地一一对应。但课堂给出的一个有用思路,是用两个维度组织这些现象:
Degree of conventionality
越 conventionalized,意义越稳定、越依赖 shared code;越不 conventionalized,越需要 contextual inference,或者越依靠 iconic / natural evidence。Presence of communicative intention
某种 behaviour 可能是 speaker 有意让 audience 注意的,也可能只是无意泄露 information。
Wharton 的思路可以进一步概括为:
1 | meaningN |
其中:
- meaningN:自然 evidence,没有 communicative intention;
- showing:有意展示 evidence,但 hearer 主要因为 evidence 本身而形成判断;
- meaningNN:speaker intends hearer to recognize the communicative intention。
8. 与前面理论的连接
这两天的内容其实把整门课程重新连起来:
- Grice:speaker meaning 与 hearer unintended inference 必须区分;
- Neo-Gricean:contrastive stress 可以通过 stereotype 与 markedness 解释;
- Relevance Theory:prosody、gesture、facial expression 会改变 accessibility、processing effort 和 contextual selection;
- Speech Acts:illocutionary force 不只来自 sentence type,也可能由 intonation、stress、gesture 和 multimodal context 帮助确定;
- (Im)politeness:prosody 和 nonverbal behaviour 也会参与 social evaluation 与 uptake。
核心框架:
1 | words |
语用意义不只存在于 words 中。声音、身体行为和其他模态以不同程度的 conventionality、iconicity 与 communicative intention 共同参与意义建构。
